Velorose is delighted to present ANOTHER LIFE by Ben Katzler, featuring 31 photographs taken between September 2024 and May 2026

ANOTHER LIFE documents a deeply personal journey through illness, recovery and renewal; the exhibition brings together a body of work created throughout that journey, a visual timeline exploring vulnerability, resilience, perspective and hope. Ben was diagnosed with myeloma, a form of blood cancer in February 2025, and photography - previously both a professional and creative outlet - became a way of understanding, documenting and rebuilding life during and after treatment, and in to remission

Everything here began with the realisation that I did not want to die

From diagnosis, through months of treatment and recovery, that discovery became the impulse to keep going out into the world to make photographs

It made sense to keep shooting on 35mm film. Film has, quite literally, a life of its own, and it’s the only other life over which I can have any kind of control or responsibility

This is life seen through a lens, smudged with the knowledge that it might be taken away - and with a renewed wish to enjoy everything, to love, to be here

Exhibition in partnership with Myeloma UK, the sole charity dedicated to providing support, influencing access to treatments and researching a cure; a significant proportion (greater than 25%) of the proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the charity

There were months of being sick without knowing, believing inflammation was the source of all the physical discomfort and could be treated with hot water bottles and rest. So diagnosis was like leaving one kind of oblivion for another, via a bolt of reality - getting used to the regularity of the same kind of view and having romantic ideas of what’s coming

Does finding love kill the feeling of losing it? It’s hard to remember, as is a lot more. All of that would have to wait

Tolerance for a lot of things became all but non-existent, while what goes on in other people’s hearts and minds would become a daily fascination

Gentle walks while the body rebuilt itself meant being closer to and loving the natural world, even when it’d been tampered with. And it’s true; it rejuvenates you, being amongst that which lives and breathes but doesn’t judge or hurt you intentionally. You can find heaven on Earth

The inanimate world is full of characters

Garachico was a bit like a movie set and the kind of place where life would inevitably become a soap opera

Every kid should grow up in Siracusa. And it was easy to see why they gave Catania a different name

It rarely pays to look backwards, but sometimes the past is in front of you; things from before that you want to keep. You might even see your future at the same time
