Liam Leslie, A Ribbon in Space
Velorose, 7 April 2017 – 26 May 2017
The Lighthouse Gallery, Glasgow, 28 September 2017 - 20 December 2017

Liam Leslie’s MAXXI VIII has been selected by the Ingram Collection for their Young Contemporary Talent Purchase Prize and will be on exhibition at The Cello Factory, London, SE1 8TJ from 7 December 2017 - 11 December 2017

‘Like a Ribbon in Space’ is how Jonathan Glancey quoted Zaha Hadid’s own description of the curves and planes of MAXXI, the museum of art and architecture that she designed for the Flaminio district in Rome

For his first solo exhibition, Liam Leslie’s sensitive eye presents a building that houses art, as art rather than architecture. concrete becomes abstract, earthly becomes ethereal, and all sense of scale disappears; these photographs bring to mind the radical compositions of the 21st century architect Hadid’s hero from the world of 20th century art, Kazimir Malevich

Where many have designed object buildings, few have created inhabited sculpture; only faint architectural features and the occasional cloud belie what is truly represented in the voids of black and white
